At first he thought the caterwauls a dream. They startled him awake as most night terrors did, but when Malachi blinked open his bleary eyes, he felt his stomach stir. Something wasn't right: the cries did not fade with the dawn of reality, and now a different chord struck his ears - Njal's deep and threatening bay. Dark fear spiked his fur and the Kalderon scrambled to his paws. His heart raced and he felt his mouth go dry. The lynx. The pups. He didn't need to think any further. Malachi tore toward the territory's heart, every pawstep filled with deep dread. His paws could not carry him fast enough.

Tuwawi's voice rose above the fading noise, desperate wails of her son's name, and Malachi felt his heart churn with a flash of hot anxiety. He tore into the clearing and for a moment froze at the surreal sight before his eyes. He felt the panic in Tuwawi's every note and imagined her children in the den, one pup too short. Pink tongue flashed across his lips and for a heartbeat Malachi froze. This couldn't be happening, not again. His brows knit and he felt his thoughts slipping, but then his eyes lighted upon Danica circling and scouting the clearing, and he found his thoughts plummeting back into reality. Malachi charged to join her, circling her opposite as he strained to find something, anything, over the muddled scent of blood and cat and wolf that hung so heavy on the air. And deep within, an anger began to lick cooly at his pounding heart.
