the air bit cold against her nose, sharp with the high breath of the glacier. morwenna moved through the frostbitten valley with her head low and ears high, cutting a quiet path through the brush where snow met rock, where the land whispered its ancient warnings. the pups had been fed. ishmira and other shore would tend them. this time was hers—to scout, to think, to feel the ache in her limbs and make something useful of it.
the wind dragged ribbons of mist from the glacier’s edge, slow and ghostlike, and she watched it with narrowed eyes. there were tracks here—old, half-iced over, the kind that did not belong to deer or hare. too heavy. too aimless.
she circled wide, careful to stay upwind, breath trailing silver as she worked the rim of the valley. her coat, dark and coarse, caught the sun’s low fire in places but vanished against the snowdrifts in others. she was not meant to be seen.
