The border had been successfully secured, and Shale looked around at the wolves assembled, panting slightly as he tried to slow his breathing.

Though black humor danced in each syllable, laughter did not reach his eyes nor his mouth, and he cast a worried glance toward where the two had fled. "Should I go after them, make sure they get far away?" he asked Day, ears pricked in readiness.
