Eventually, the wolves' teamwork paid off. Elwood hung back as the doe's life came to an end; it was obvious that she was finished, and the Alpha pair would be first to feed. He took the opportunity to catch his breath, licking his lips hungrily as he watched Peregrine and Fox take their fill.

Finley would be next, as the pack's Beta, and with his current standing as Gamma, Elwood would follow her. As far as the lower ranking wolves were concerned -- himself included -- it would likely be more of a free for all, though there were few enough hunters that a scuffle would be unlikely.

Once the leaders backed away from the kill -- and Fox reclined sleepily in the snow, a victim of a full belly -- Elwood approached, his head and tail held in deference. He seized the opportunity to tear at the deer's stomach, where Fox had been eating only moments before, and consumed some of the entrails that remained. When he was sated, he retreated as well, lying down on his belly and cleaning the elk's blood from his paws and face. After the group had fed, he wanted to help Peregrine and any other gamekeepers with dismembering and storing what was left of the carcass.
