Finley crept silently along the lake's edge just at the base of the little peak that poked out of the inner Easter edge of the Caldera. The shore was rather sandy, but stiff and near frozen from the cold. The tall, faded grasses that sprang out in tufts along the beach were dry and rimmed with frost. They tickled her belly as she stepped over them, but she hardly noticed as she stared out across the waters at the little island that centered the lake like the iris of a giant blue eye.

The beta wanted to go there. It was like an itch that she couldn't scratch, her desire to place her paws upon that little piece of land. From where she stood upon the shore, it didn't seem all that far. If it was Summer, she definitely would already have made the swim, as unwise as it was even without the risk of freezing to death. Finley was smarter than to attempt such now, knowing full well that the foam that lapped at the shore was deathly cold.

Perhaps when it froze solid, she could take the risk and just run there. But for now, Finley was doomed to stare out longingly across the water as the morning sun crept up slowly towards the sky.
