wanted to give the pups a chance for the mainland as not to strand anyones story. staying very vague either way <3 @Fabienne & @Noé

it would never be explained how chani managed to do it.
a mind snapped by solitude and the unrelenting calls of the sea. her shouting, her wailing, her screaming — chani; undone.
a piece of driftwood.
her eyes, blurring as she stared toward the horizon which she knew was only able to be seen at midday, and then once in the evening.
she had counted. she had waited.
she had launched.
chani would never be able to say how she had managed it. how through the hours and the frigid water she was able to keep her conscious or the steady monotone of a french song.
and she knew it, as soon as the land lapped into view again, nearer;
a piece of driftwood;
a mind that screamed no further
a giving, deep inside.
but in chani lived the voice of a thousand oceans, the echo of lwa dredged deep.
it was their power which brought her at last to the lapping sands of the deep blue cape.
a piece of driftwood; her shaking arm pushed it high, high, high into the tangled sandgrass and dunes.
a thin, blurring cry from a chest too weakened, but chani threw its sound into the air until she felt it had a chance of reaching @Shadess and those others of her family.
maman
maman
she rolled to her back against the sand, and overhead the skies to her dimmed gaze seemed to darken, streaked now with thick pale lightning. each light felt! each hum of energy experienced. electricity lifted her, and Sogbo set down His face from the clouds once more.
what has a howl but no throat? asked the lwa.
chani's face broke into a dreamy smile.
the wind.
very good!
glowing yellow, grandmotherly arms opening.
we did not expect to see you so soon
but you are welcomed, daughter of sapphique.
and down came rain like silver pearls, wind whipping as Sogbo carried away the seawolf's spirit and left her flesh softly there upon the bank.

Whether it was the wildness that lived within her. Or the fact that she was descended from queens. Fabienne weathered the storm with her mother. She wasn't much help. She couldn't do much but paddle her legs sluggish.
The cold pierced her to her marrow. And thr seawater coated her throat thickly. She coughed and gagged. Too tired to speak or stir much towards the end. But she tried.
She pushed her effort forward when manman called out. She lifted her own tiny voice. It was quickly swallowed by the wind. But she was alive, hanging on for now.

A piece of driftwood.
Shadess heard the mews and grunts of familiarity. They were sounds deep in her memory from early weeks of life. Pups. She heard pups.
Shadess trotted along the length of sand, miles stretched out into the ocean. Further, further toward the sound.
A piece of driftwood. Nestled two small pups. One with streaks of deep red as Shadess own blood-coat she wore. A little girl. A girl of Sapphique. Shadess took her with a pluck and then sat her inbetween her forelegs, drapping a forleg over her and holding her close.
Another pup within. Colors in sand and dark rock. Unfortunately though, a male. Shadess evergreen eyes stared out at the woman laid dead. Her kin. Her cousin. A piece of driftwood, she had pushed all this way and it had taken every ounce of strength she had in her to do so.

It was too soon. Too soon!
Manman had not taught them how to swim, had not shown them the island as she'd promised and yet with round, trusting eyes, little Noe had allowed his mother to bundle him unto a vessel. He made no complaint as wind pulled at his fur, made not a peep as they beached and rain lashed his face.
Through the blur of the storm, the boy sat hunched and staring, wondering why manman did not wake. Someone else was here, but Noe did not see them. That someone else had taken Fabienne, and it was not long before he too was scooped up into warmth.
The same saltbrine scent was there.
But it was not manman.
