All Welcome
Late afternoon.
14 — HCM roll.

OOC: Wow, he came so close to dying on his first roll ever. That'd be hilarious but terrible.

It had been hours since he had lost track of his people. The shrill voice of the woman no longer pierced the air but he couldn't shake the urge to return to her — loyal as he had been taught to be, but fearful of the hellion that lived with her. That younger human spent hours upon hours with his loud-box; it took all of Ro's already limited patience to prompt the boy for games, treats, attention, but he had learned quickly that the attention of the human pup was not a benefit to him. He wondered as he bolted through the forest if he'd ever find the woman again; if he would ever see a road, taste the stale flavor of chemical-flavored kibble, or if fate had brought him to this eden for a reason. It was harder to live out here, but there was much to chase and many interesting places to visit, so Ro soon lost himself to the adventure.

the trail she finds is decidedly odd. the scent is canine, but soft and far removed from that of wolves and coyotes. she considers briefly, but decides to follow it all the same. she is determined to hunt, but her body is reaching its limit. the pain the comes now is near deliberating, sharp and sudden, and her limbs are sore and joints throbbing. perhaps it is the pregnancy, but she is desolate. the woman she used to be is gone, and no matter how hard she pushes herself, she can not run with the speed she used to, and this far from the territory, her exhaustion is overpowering. and so, when she finally catches up with the tiny creature (which looks soft and easy prey) she can do little else but pant and watch it hawkishly, bumbling up in such a way that so creature in her vicinity could miss her approach.

Going to the dog park was always a big issue for Ro; maybe that's why the human woman had taken him this far from the cities? The wild was different. There were many smells and tastes and pretty things, but very few others like him. He thought he could smell them sometimes — these wild dogs — but his instinct was to avoid, not stick around or investigate when he came across the fleeting scents. There were no human smells out here and so he was lost in an unfamiliar, alienating landscape.

The crashing of the bushes made the boy stop sharply. He stood as if pointing; tail up, with a curious twitch. One paw raised, head level with his shoulders — and out of the mess of green plants and grey shadows came a giant of a dog. Its coat was grey like freshly poured cement and reminded Rohirrim of the bossy big dog that lived down the street from his people.

He was instantly nervous, and curious, and confused. She moved without making much noise after that, and he watched her with his big dark eyes as wide as they could be, licking at his lips as he felt his anxiety spike. He wanted to make himself as small as possible, or run, but didn't know where to go so he stayed put and merely stared.

just enough energy for one lunge. one leap, and she could have it. she was hungry, goddammit, but her limbs felt like they were minutes away from giving out. her tongue passed over her lips, but it was for a different reason. with a groan, she eased onto her haunches, peering at the dog all the while. "you talk?" she asked, for despite herself, she glanced once into the canids dark gaze and found a spark of intelligence there. it was hard not to, for he was staring, and obviously not fearing for his life. he looked nervous, yes, but the fact that he wasn't running was troubling.

Staying planted where he stood was probably what kept him alive in that moment, although he did not know it. Roh had his own urges when things were thrown (like sticks and balls) or when things ran (like squirrels, or the human pup) and he had learned quickly that the humans would also react if he did; tugging at his throat for obedience if he got too riled, or chasing him if he went somewhere he shouldn't be. He knew when not to run, is the point. He knew when not to become prey.

Then, the strangest thing happened. The big dog looked at him (which alone made him nervous and twitchy and anxious all over) and then they spoke. Roh's little head tilted and the base of his ears twitched; his little nose wriggled for a moment, and he said, Yes. It struck him afterwards that this big wild thing might not be as dangerous as he first thought, but Rohirrim would remain wary just in case.

she felt like she might rip at the seems, and so sat with a sigh of defeat. her brain felt unbearably slow, for the realization of what this thing was, exactly, came sluggishly. "you're a dog?" came her next question, remembering Poppy. she'd been strange, but possessed most of the mental capacity of a wolf and looked somewhat like them - this one, on the other hand, looked entirely weird. perhaps a birth defect, but he carried that same soft scent, and a different one, overlayed and entirely foreign.
