All Welcome
conquest still hadn't come home and famine was tired of looking. he slumped down outside of serem's den, wide violet eyes doing one final survey of the territory. if nothing else, his sister sure was better at hiding than he was at seeking.

he stood up and shook out his fur, peeking into the den at his family. were they hungry? milk was alright, but it was nothing compared to meat; since learning how to get it, famine hadn't stopped looking for food.

the child started his walk, attention shifted from conquest to his next meal.

A woodchuck dangled from memory's jaws, the crushed head splattering blood side to side as he trotted happily towards Serem's den.
he was surprised to see a rugrat out of the den and paused, plopping the dead rodent down and gently nudging the pup. "Hey kid. What are you doing this far out? You hungry?"

famine couldn't believe it! he'd just been looking for something to eat, and here was an adult with a perfectly good (and dead) something. ignoring memory's question for a moment, he yipped and moved toward the much-too-heavy woodchuck.

without help, famine would have wrapped his jaws around a limp ankle and begun to pull toward the den. foodin', he grunted between tight teeth. there was a determined frown on his face, one with lines much too old for such a young pup.

Memory chuckled. And pushed the pup back away from the carcass. "Nope. Time for the first lesson, kid. If you wanna eat, you gotta work for it. And around here, we fight for what we own."
His lesson would be nowhere near as harsh as Nix had been. Serem would flay him alive if it was. He gave a soft play-growl and mouthed at the pup, crouching into a play bow.

famine opened his mouth to protest, but nothing came out. what was memory doing? why couldn't he eat? frustrated and confused, he lunged against memory's bite with one of his own, not knowing that it would result in being bitten. famine gasped at the surprising sensation, then lunged forward again with hopes of catching flesh.

The kid had spunk, that was for sure. He didn't expect coordination or any skill- his intent was to focus him and give him confidence. He gave another groan/growl and met the pups lunge, nomming his leg, tail thumping softly. He swung his paw, batting him softly sideways. "Come on...good. there you go! Use those needle teeth!"

memory wasn't losing! frustrated, famine aimed for another bite, but was swatted onto his side by the reach of his opponent. he sucked in a sharp breath and did his best to growl, reminding himself that losing this fight meant losing a meal.

this time, famine went for memory's tail. he turned and snapped for its base, not letting go (assuming he was successful).

If he wasn't trying so hard to make the kid learn to fight, he would have cooed over the adorable frustrated growl. Instead he was about to egg him on when Famine slipped past him, his teeth sinking into the base of his tail. He gave a Yelp of pain and surprise and tried to spin around, flopping dramatically onto his side. "Ahhh you got me! Oh no! I shall never be vanquished!" He craned his head back play growling and mouthing at whatever he could reach.

famine ignored memory's pretend anguish. he was more interested in causing more pain than stopping; rather than trying to comfort his companion, the child rushed forward with another bite aimed at his throat. meanwhile, memory's counter-attacks continued landing, only furthering his anger. why couldn't he just get the freaking meal already!?

The bite to the throat was the final straw.
Memory had sensed the kids frustration- he had wanted to push him, but he was also mostly just playing. The bite landed on the sensitive healing wound and he swiped a paw, his play growl holding a warning. "Watch out. On a real enemy that would have been a good call, though." He rolled to his paws and grabbed the woodchuck, tearing it open so loops of intestines flopped out. "Here. Go ahead. You earned it."

the response was more than famine had bargained for. he stepped back with a quiet whine, eyes wide with an apology. was memory upset? famine didn't have much time to think about it before the offer of food was made again, quickly stealing his attention.

the child immediately made his way toward the corpse. tiny dagger teeth dug into the exposed flesh, enjoying every bite of what his stomach could hold. and once he'd had his fill, famine fell onto his side with a loud belch to prepare for another nap.

He hadn't meant to frighten the kid. Luckily it seemed the offer of food was enough to distract the kid, and he patiently looked on as he ate his fill then flopped over for a nap.
which was a slight problem. He knew he couldn't leave the kid alone out here. But with the Warm late spring sun filtering through the trees, he decided to lay down as well, curling protectively around the pup, gnawing on the rodent carcass and eventually dozing off.
