She lingers at the border between Moonspear and Firefly Glen, inspecting it almost warily. Though she wears Osiris's scent like a shield around her, it is still difficult to settle the scream of instinct that tells her to flee. This is not her pack, though the scents mingle so much where they join that they almost seem to be one pack. She settles back on her haunches a safe distance away, marveling at the ingenuity of goldfish when gathered in large enough numbers. What clever ideas they create!

Since her last trek to the borders — the one where she’d been attacked by the cougar, months ago — she had been through many changes. A restlessness was starting up in her again, brought forth by the colder season. She was smart enough to know to stick close to home, for this season could very well bring her season.

A scent she did not recognize caught her attention, though she was not alarmed because woven in was the scent of her brother, Osiris. She missed him terribly; she should pay him a visit soon, see how things were going.

She followed the scent to its source and found the other seemingly lost in thought. Hello, she calls lightly, so that the other knows she isn’t a threat. You’re from my brother’s pack, aren’t you?

A girl approaches, and Astrid's breath catches. A star among fireflies, a diamond among rhinestones; the most beautiful creature in the Glen and the mountain beyond, surely. A common coat, yet it is her features that light the girl on fire, the character that brightens and sharpens them and gleams behind her eyes. The nightcreature steps forward, head dipping smoothly in greeting, and offers one of the nods that have served her so well in this pack. It is a strange concept to her, that such a simple movement satisfies the need for response so completely. She knows the gesture, yet it would never have passed for an answer in her homeland. Just another thing to marvel at, while she basks in the beauty of a queen in the making, a sleek shark among the goldfish.

She does not notice the way the girl is captured by her, for nobody has ever revered Vega in such a way. In this way, she treats everyone as equal — for what else was there to do? She was so sheltered that only once had she ever left the territory in which she was born. Vega knew realistically that strangers could be dangerous, especially after everything her parents had told her, but she had never experienced it herself.

Even still, there was no naïveté in her grace. She was inexperienced, not dull. If it ever came down to it, Vega was an Ostrega, and she could do what needed to be done when it needed doing.

The other girl nods, but makes no reply, and Vega lapses into silence. She steps further into the light, closer to the girl, and recognizes in her fur the scent of not just Osi, but all of her littermates. It tugs at her heartstrings and a scarcely obscured expression comes across Vega’s features before it quickly melts away again.

Is it prosperous? With Osiris leading in the foothills of Moonspear it must be, she thought — the question was more for conversation’s sake than to satisfy her own curiosity. My name is Vega. I’m Osiris’ littermate.
