Torbine Empire: A priestess among the Empire of Torbine, Calluna lived a rather plentiful life as a youth to a growing woman. She fell in love young and took a mate, to which they prepared for a large family come each passing spring. Though as each spring passed, no success of pups came. She was four now and and after her third season without pups the rift in her partnership tore her mate from her. Two years pass and the crone, lonely and bitter, falls into pregnancy at six. She births a single, solid black child with eyes as vibrant as spilt blood. Suspicion rises in wonder of how the child came to be, for no man claimed it as their own nor could the crone tell of one. "A witch!" The priestesses cried, fearing that the crone had made sacrifice and a pact with the devil in order to have a child of her own. After such an uproar and trial, Calluna was banished from the Empire and forced beyond the mountains of Torbine, pup in tow. Finding pity by a small valley pack not far beyond the mountains, Calluna and her child were taken in. The crone found love and company only in her child, keeping to herself unless called upon.

Blood Valley: Raised in Scarlet Valley, otherwise known as 'Blood Valley', Hemlocke was content to keep at his mother's side as a youth. He was raised only by her and when told of his father, was only said that he had none and that 'he was a blessing of the Gods'. Sheltered from the world, Hemlocke followed his mother's footsteps and learned of the Gods, the heavens and of herbs, both helpful and harmful. As Hemlocke aged and mingled with others, tales of the witch and his creation spread.

Though the pair were shunned, they remained members of the pack due to fear of the crone's wrath. After Hemlocke's first birthday and as winter approaches, the crone grows ill. She is well over seven now and her illness and the cold takes over her aging form. The Blood Valley wolves secretly pray for her undoing as Hemlocke remains attached to her side. In her final days, Calluna finally gives her son the answers which he sought of his creation. She spoke only this - that she had prayed to the Gods for years and they were only ever silent. Then she called to the Devil, and he spoke.

The next sunrise, the witch was dead.
