This time he was not able to avoid the larger of the wolves. Almost instinctively he released the firsts socket, head whipping to snap at the male on his back.

He felt nearly crushed under the weight, legs threatening to give out and force him to the ground. His gaze flicked to Pepper, desperate.

Had they wandered too far? Were they on their own?

The leg was slipping, but he was committed. He didn't move when he saw the wolf moving in to bite and felt each tooth breaking the fragile skin along his cheek. He fought through with a growl, but was left weakened and unable to hold tight to the leg. It slipped from his maw, flesh sheared and torn by his teeth.

He had been too focused to see that the other wolf had attacked Phobos, and there was too much chaos to determine what all had happened. Everything was moving too quickly.

The one he had been fighting was now also going after his mate.

His body protested as he lunged after in an attempt to knock the large wolf off of Phobos by charging at his side.

The feeling was sickening as the tooth retreated. His eye was throbbing, and his face was wet with his own blood and a coating of the wolf's saliva. His brother had responded. He was presented with an opportunity to flee.

He would. He was too important to be subject to this.

But not just yet. They came for fur.

He snapped at the black wolf, aiming just behind his shoulder. His intention was to pull a clump free, then retreat. His brother would be fine.

The larger hit his side, yet his grip persisted. He could feel the traitor growing weak under his weight. So long as he was occupied Chesley could take what they had came for.

Eyes flicking back to his attacker, he aimed a kick to hit him square in the jaw. He was showing little care towards him now: more focused than he was vicious.

His attention pulled away from the first he did not notice the snap until jaws pulled on his fur. Legs unable to hold the weight of his second attacker he fell to the ground.

Phobos could only assume that this was life or death, so he would react in such a way.

Kicking out his back legs he scratched the soft stomach of the larger. The threat of further injury to the area would scare off most wolves.

He collided, but it did little to move the wolf. He was rock-like in nature, totally immovable. The shock of running into the wolf sent a shock through Pepper's body that caused him to feel damn-near every bone crying for him to stop, but he couldn't.

He staggered backward, too disoriented to see the back paw, which caught his tender face. His teeth clashed together, tongue in the midst. Pain flooded his mouth as he fell onto his rear, dizzied. Hot blood filled his mouth as he pulled his tongue free of the sharp teeth embedded within.

His head felt light, his vision was fading, and his hearing had been replaced by a high-pitched whine.

He stood again, this time going for the wolf's tail. The attempt was weakened. He couldn't win this, but he could still fight.

The black wolf was too preoccupied to stop him. He grabbed a tuft of fur, then yanked it free. He took his leave, bolting back to where they came from, trusting his brother could make a similar escape on his own.

Feeling teeth grazing his tail he turned, now using the force of his front paw to push off the larger. With the trophy taken, he gave the smaller wolf a swift kick before running to the bush to join Chesley.

"Keep your jaws closed tight - I don't want even a strand lost." He said in an almost stern tone, though his expression softened.

"You did better than I thought you would. I'll be sure to tell maman."

Chaudry reserved kindness for those who were of no threat. Chesley had earned this spot, it seemed.

The attackers departing, he lay still on the ground. Wide eyes flicking to Pepper he soon scrambled to his feet, rushing to the other's side. "Are you alright? Did he hurt you badly?"

He could worry about his own wounds when they returned to Sapphique. Pepper had been hurt already - there was every reason to worry about him.

He was pushed away and too weak to do anything about it. And then they were gone, back to where they came from. Pepper wanted to go after them, but stepping forward only caused him to stumble.

He had no choice but to give up.

He could hear Phobos speaking, but had trouble making out what was being said. He felt like he needed to lie down, but was already doing so. He couldn't see how bad it was, but his shoulder was burning. His mouth was filling with fresh blood. He was certain something was broken.

He thought he heard Phobos ask if he was ok.

"Just need a minute," he panted. All things considered, the black and white wolf looked ok. Bloody, but still standing.

His brother joined him soon after.

He struggled to keep his eye open. It hurt quite a lot and was producing a lot of (what he hoped to be) tears.. A dull, throbbing pain. The puncture wounds on his face were much more upfront with their pain. But, they got what they came for.

He kept feeling it, though. The tooth slipping in. It made him want to vomit.

He didn't respond to his brother, just offered a nod. Despite the praise, he was angry with him for roping him into this. He'd worked hard to keep his face pristine. Scars were not a good look.

He knew Chesley was upset. He was afraid of the scarring, afraid maman would reject him if he was ugly. Chaudry clicked his tongue, searching for comforting words. He sighed, licking over the wound. "Keep it clean, you won't scar."

It was only natural to care for your blood. He knew Chesley would blame him for his injuries, yet Chaudry would not resent him for it.

A flick of his tail, and he began on the path back to the mountains. Back to maman.

He couldn't help but tremble at the sight of the others injuries. He couldn't help but blame himself.

He should have been the one in this state, after all it was his own past catching up with him. Pepper was caught in the middle, and nothing upset Phobos more.

He stood slowly, taking a moment to rest after his front legs propped him up. Sudden movements were nauseating. After a few failed attempts, he was standing again. Wobbly, and in a great amount of pain, but standing. He could see the nape of his mate's neck, which looked much worse than he thought.

His tongue had started to swell around the puncture. From what he could tell, the tooth hadn't gone all the way through, but it hurt like hell and made speech awkward.

"Should be gettin' back," he said, speaking through exhausted breaths. He was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to make it back. Now that he stood, he only wanted to lie back down. But they shouldn't stay here.

As much as he would've liked to act like his brother's affection was something he didn't care about, his tail swayed ever so slightly when his Chaudry began cleaning him up. It was a warm feeling he rarely experienced anymore.

When they were done, and his face sufficiently coated in warm drool, he followed, hanging tightly to the fur. The pelt of the stranger is all he could smell. He wanted to know who it was and why they attacked. Not that it mattered. He figured the tawny wolf wouldn't outlive his wounds, and the black and white one was too scrawny to be a threat with Chaudry around.

Shaky and plenty worried, he made a point of allowing Pepper to lean on him. He would lead him home, he would treat him and treat him well.

A sense of anger was beginning to bubble up inside him. He wondered if they had followed him here, or if it was merely a coinidence - but what he knew for certain was that is the ash son was here, then it was not certain that the rest would be. But the soot son? He must be following his mother.

Yes, their mother. She was to blame. She would be the one punished.

But this punishment could wait, now he needed to tend to Pepper. His new life would come before his old one. Looking homewards, he began their trek.
