Just before taking his sons from the clutches of Saatsine, @Anselm had come to this island alone, and once they were safely away from Sun Eater's vigilant gaze, he had told Gideon where he could find his mother's grave. By then, @Ezra had gone off on a hunting trip, one from which his brother did not return. Gideon had searched for some time, but turned up no trace of Ezra nearby. Overcome with grief from the losses of both his mother and brother, Gideon disappeared, leaving Anselm in the process.
The guilt of that remained with him, but he would make amends soon. Today, Gideon was clawing his way out of the frigid sea onto the cold sand of Wheeling Gull Isle. He shook out his sodden coat, body wracked with the deep sort of shivers that made your bones creak and ache. In his maw were clutched several drooping, waterlogged daffodils gathered from inland. It was a wonder the shock of the cold water hadn't caused him to drop them.
When he could feel his toes again and make his legs obey his thoughts, Gideon left the beach behind and headed for the hills. Later in the year, lavenders would bloom here, but it was only new spring grass trodden underfoot as he searched for her grave. Wind gusted over the island, carrying the sound of gulls from seaside cliffs.
When he found the spot, Gideon placed the daffodils upon the mound and sat with head bowed in contemplative silence, biting back the stinging, strangling sensation in his throat. Half an hour passed in silence as Gideon mourned his mother, and then he picked himself up and headed for the mainland, leaving her and the daffodils to the peace of the windswept hillside.
