Emberwood to what end

Having hoisted himself in to a tree, Micco was able to stare down at the approaching figure with ease. He didn't know what it was yet - he thought, maybe it was a deer? His mother spoke of them from time to time. But the creature did not have a crown upon its head as she described it; it was small and dark, like a bear cub, but sharper of features. The scent of the wolf pervaded this area now. It was enough to make Micco's short fur stand tall, his tail to puff with uncertainty, and he gripped the reaching branch before him with a quiet intensity. With a small shift of his body, he managed to slip undetected on to a different branch; now he was looming directly above the stationary creature, watching, waiting, studying.
