Perhaps if Charon had seen that Dash was too far gone to help, he would not have attacked, would've stayed away with his little girl and made sure that she had been safe. He would've turned away, without the help of his pack, and left the problem for another day should it persist. Charon wasn't exactly a hero, and had he a moment to think about this, he would've chickened out, knowing what terrible things larger predators could do; knowing what, once, the bear had done to Atreyu.

But as things were, as he came running onto the scene and with adrenaline coursing through his veins and a protectiveness over his little girl and Dash both, he didn't waste time throwing himself at the mountain lion. He dove straight for the neck, hoping to get a good grip while the creature was preoccupied with his friend, providing him a chance that he wouldn't otherwise have.
