the conversation moves on, in a way, and she's reminded of one loose end she hasn't been able to find. "where'd the boy go? he couldn't have just gotten away." or, perhaps, they'd let him. they might have killed him, too, which strikes the girl as a waste and even upsetting. he'd already been dealt punishment for trespassing; she'd broken his leg herself (though in all honesty she didn't want another clay around). anything more seemed unnecessary.
