A recent growth spurt had made Kallik all lanky legs and too big paws; it was obvious he was going to be large like his father, and it was also obvious that the next few months of his life were going be full of awkward growth. Talking was still a challenge for him, but he manged a few words here and there with his family. He talked the most with Valette, though; with her, he would talk mostly full sentences because of all the wolves in his life, he trusted her the most. He had gotten pretty good a talking with his dad, too, he just often preferred not to unless asked a direct question.
As for wandering from the rendezvous site on his own, he had gotten braver in that regard too. He still stuck fairly close to what felt safe, but he could be found wandering a few miles in each direction, especially as the weather grew colder and grew more curious.
The sun had set hours ago, and the only thing lighting the grass in front of him was the glow from the moon. He followed the lit path in front of him, the cool air turning his breaths into light fog around his muzzle. When he found a collection of boulders, he stopped to inspect them, deciding after a few sniffs around the perimeter that it appeared safe. He jumped up to the top and settled down on his haunches, his gaze cast up to the cloudy night sky as he somberly wondered if his mother was looking down on him.
