I didn't proof read this so I apologize for mistakes xD Let it begin!
Merrit had worked Fox's Glade into the rhythm of his daily patrol. In part, his decision was strategic. The glade seemed the centre of more predatory traffic than usual, and more than mere foxes, as of late. Incorporating the woods into his routine was as much to keep Easthollow safe, as it was to give him a sane sense of mind. These were the reasons he would give, if anyone bothered to ask.
However, there was another purpose to his track. Arlette had not returned, and while Merrit had never known Kaito, Kaito mattered to her. He was not buried at the stones where they could tend to the graves, but here, in these woods -- and Merrit imagined very few knew of where @Arlette had buried him, and the children she had borne.
It had been her daily habit to visit them here, and in her absence, Merrit made the habit his. Tending to the grave, keeping leaves and branches away, ensuring no animal had unearthed what lot or little remained of the man his sister had loved.
He was just finishing up paying his respects when a different sort of noise struck the air. It was usual to hear screams in the glade. The foxes were always wailing to one another in some strange shape or fashion. That was simply what foxes did. But this voice made his skin prickle, and ice clammed up his heart.
Merrit took off towards the source. It had been soft, crying, almost. And when he broke the scene -
A wolf, tucked over a body, blood staining its face as it ripped and fed. The world seemed to rock; visions of Clay swallowed him, and his voice cracked, "stop," even while his legs seemed to carry him in an effortless glide towards the creature who gorge itself on one of their own. "STOP."
He aimed to ram himself into the beast's haggard side, to force it away from the body on the ground.
with quiet words I'll lead you in
