He followed his urge to hunt the slopes, straying from their chosen quarry of caribou, and began tracking a herd of Rocky Mountain sheep instead. They moved up into higher grounds with the arrival of the wolves but he knew it would only be a matter of time before they descended to lower grounds again so that they could graze.
His wife might be interested in a hunt, he thought- he would show her the ways he and his cousins had hunted sheep when he’d been a child- only to realize that her scent, when he found it, had changed.
He was a man who paid attention to small details- and knew immediately that the change in her hormones, while faint, indicated that she had found her season. He felt relieved, excited, and yet a bit anxious too- if she decided she would not take the risk…He would have to squash his own instincts, while standing guard to make sure no others touched her if her own instincts became too difficult to manage.
Of course she had gone to the water, drawn to it like an otter. Ridgeback, on the other hand, yipped when he caught sight of her- and raced for the silvery waters, sending smoothe pebbles flying as he reached the bank and at the last minute, he leapt- his speed carrying him out past the shallows until his paws skimmed the icy surface and he realized far too late just how frigid the water would be, as his weight sank below the surface.
He inhaled sharply and began to paddle, sucking in panicked breaths for a moment from the shock. He flailed, returning to the shallows until his feet caught hold of the ground. His lower jaw trembled as he fought through a few shaky, nonsensical words.
