Her hackles lifted and her shoulder tensed when he kissed her cheek, but he drew away so suddenly that she felt suddenly very self-conscious. Was she so hideous that she disgusted him? She fought with her own budding anger and frustration, casting a bewildered and stark, one-eyed gaze toward him, turning her head slightly so he might not have to look at the marred half of her face. 

The realization that she might be hideous hurt, but to show hurt was to show weakness. Instead, she remained tense, warring with herself while also trying to digest the fact that he was now alone. 

Had he not made her feel ugly, she would have insisted that he come to Swiftcurrent at once. She some sympathy, some validation- just another thing to war with. 

Where you go now? She'd managed to lower her voice to a regular speaking volume, though the gruffness remained.
