tamar was rigid and the goldblood hairs upon her nape stood sharply, but the pale brown of her eyes lifted slowly to his own. and though she could not hold the cold fire of his eyes for long, the girl was not afraid.
"i was brought to him by jawahir." tamar blinked. "you do not understand this place, do you, arsenio?" she would tell him then. the tan of her eyes firmed. "i was to be his object of pleasure, but the queen does not want her maids running with her king. and so i am all of hers. do not look at me in this way. i have nothing to give you."
