The snowfall had slowed, not that it changed much about the fen. The ground was frozen solid and most of the soggy patches had frozen over with it, layered atop by a blanket of white which refused to melt. It wasn't ideal for Ibis — being slight of figure and ill-suited to the season — but she didn't care.
Her heart was racing so fast that she thought it was going to burst.
@Arielle's scent had vanished along the edge of the intended claim. At first Ibis had thought she was imagining things. That her daughters were playing tag, or hide-and-seek, and had merely gone a little farther than intended. Perhaps that was how it had started. When Ibis went to find them she passed by Lilitu at her father's heel, and without doubling back the worried mother plunged through the snow — to the limits, then beyond them.
No sign of struggle. No blood. Ibis did not know what to do as she searched, and when she finally felt her legs turn to jelly she collapsed in to the snow, letting out a small sob. Her daughter was gone.
