@Currituck set for the 18th ❤
other tag for visibility
She departed her companion's presence with the intention of hunting, assuring @Killian she'd be within howling distance should the boy need her.
Her paws took her east this time, unaware the place was temporarily inhabited. Quick, light steps brought her along one of the streams running through the territory, nose to the ground as she tracked a hare. The trail veered suddenly, sharply to the left, and the wild-furred yearling followed it along the outskirts of the grove.
The wind did not favor her today. Her downwind position left her oblivious to the proximity of the traveling group she'd tried so hard to avoid; only luck ensured her continued ignorance. Somewhere deeper in the grove, a twig snapped. The inkstain paused, ears swiveling towards the sound, and glanced around warily. Her hunt was forgotten for the moment; a deep paranoia had taken her, though she could not know her tension was warranted.

A lot happens around her she doesn’t understand. She hasn’t seen her mother in a long time, not that she minds but… she’d been important, right? Shivali took place of her need and Tahani cared for her most of the other time but she had questions and no words in which to ask. The tensions between all the adults don’t settle well with her but she has little say in most things.

Adjusting to sleeping during the day had been a difficult task but she enjoys napping in the warm sun, just outside the den they’ve been in for a few hours now. The other puppies were sleeping and Shivali was quiet, too, and doesn’t take notice to her being outside the den, glancing around at the stark white coats resting nearby. Their focus on their surroundings makes it easy for Currituck to slip away in the opposite direction, dipping beneath large leafed ferns and swerving in and out of view. Scent and sounds of another go unnoticed as she skirts around stalks and trees until the imposing form of a stranger catches her attention and forces her to skid to a halt.

Her ears twitched, the approach of something small catching her attention; not a wolf, she assumed, and was immediately proven wrong. A pup skidded into view, apparently shocked at the sight of her. She tilted her head, ears pulling forward as quick steps took her towards the child. Not much more than a month old, coat painted in red and dark tones.
She smelled familiar. Are you lost? The inkstain wondered aloud, voice soft. It occurred to her that the pup could be frightened. She sat promptly, hoping the tiny thing wouldn't flee or cry out. Only one of the traveling group knew her, and she feared the ways such an encounter could go wrong; there were many. She glanced around them, then settled her gaze back on the pup, at a loss for the moment.

The strange wolf immediately moves in her direction and asks her a question. She doesn’t recognize the words (nor does she realize it’s any different a language than the northern wolves are speaking to her) but they’re soft enough in tone that a smile comes to her face.

“Wost!” she chirps, tail thumping against the ground that causes her to scoot closer by a few inches. “Y’wost!” she tries again with several yips to follow.

The pup was not frightened, instead mimicking her question clumsily. She smiled at the attempts, suddenly feeling less pressed to return the child to her family. There was no harm in a few stolen moments, she reasoned, and she doubted she would have the opportunity again for some time. Reminded of her last meeting with her brother, she inched herself closer.
You are bold, She told the child with no small amount of warmth, one ear turned slightly to listen for the approach of another. It is a good trait, and will take you far. The yearling wondered if this was one of Siarut's children; she had no way to know, but found no resemblance between the two. But she knew genetics were sometimes a mystery, thinking of her own contrast with her father. The reminders of her family suddenly made her chest ache.

The wolf speaks more words she doesn’t understand but a lopsided grin remains on her face, nose pointed upward with excitement for what comes next. The others certainly don’t give her as much attention as she wants and when she has the sole interest of the stranger, she’s content to remain a little longer. Home will still be there when she finds it, she’s sure, and so with a beaming smile she curls her lips and mimics a high pitch howl, as much as her tiny puppy lungs can sing.

She couldn't help but laugh slightly as the child howled; a soft laugh, light and happy, the kind she rarely heard from herself. The heaviness of her thoughts abated entirely, replaced by a buoyancy of sorts. Such a strong voice, She indulged the child affectionately, tail sweeping slowly across the ground. It struck her belatedly that the noise might call another, but she could not find it in herself to chide the pup.

Perhaps we'll find your parents now, The inkstain mused to her tiny companion, rising to her feet and leaning to gently lick the girl across the top of her head if the touch was allowed. She expected no answer from her, but it felt odd to be in company without speaking, so she continued her thoughts aloud. This is a bad idea. Ah, but I guess you're cute enough to risk a few scrapes for, little singer.
She lifted her head to taste the air, finding little on the breeze. A sigh passed her lips, and she glanced to the girl, wondering how she'd get her to follow. She gestured further into the grove with her muzzle, then leaned to nose the pup to her paws. Come on, Her urging was gentle, but she half-expected her meaning would not be clear enough, as the girl had yet to show sign of comprehending anything she'd said.

Currituck’s eager gaze watches the woman as she speaks, ears perked up high upon her head as if she completely understands the foreign words. It doesn’t matter what she’s trying to say, she enjoys the attention and all of it directed at her. When she gets a little push with the dark paws, Currituck bounces back and growls playfully at the toes, snapping at them a little before the bounds off in the exact opposite direction she’d come from, bouncing from one spot to the next.

It came as little surprise when the girl refused to be returned so easily, but the wild-furred yearling huffed out an indignant snort nonetheless. She reacted immediately, following the pup at an easy pace for several yards. Naively, she hoped the chase would wear away some of the child's energy; she might have known her error if she'd ever had much experience with children, beyond observing their antics from a distance.

You're going the wrong way, She told her playfully as she finally sped up to close the distance, unsure of the accuracy of her statement. When she'd reached the pup, she moved swiftly to lift her gently by the scruff, unwilling to allow her another escape. If one of the traveling group appeared and decided she was making a meal of the pup, well. She'd deal with that when it happened.

Currituck gets pretty far by her standards. There’s no real goal to her direction, either, but there’s no doubt she’ll find her way! It can’t be that far, anyway. But her journey is cut short when the dark wolf sweeps her off the ground by the scruff, her small frame curling in upon itself out of reflex. She huffs in displeasure, squirming despite the grip, but she doesn’t have the energy to really put up much of a fight, ultimately drooping in the grip of the older wolf.

The child struggled only a few moments, and as she fell limp Alessia guiltily loosened her already-soft grip by fractions. It felt strange, to her, to hold another's pup without being invited; but there were none around to invite her, and perhaps they ought to have raised a more docile child if her intrusion was unwelcome. She did not really mean the thought. The girl's spirit intrigued and charmed her, and perhaps triggered the faintest maternal stirrings within the yearling.
She set off at a swift pace, turning back the direction the girl had come from. Plans for when she found the group whirled in her mind; in an ideal world, she'd stay hidden, dropping the pup off near the group and sending her on her way with a nudge. She'd slip away without being seen and tuck the encounter away in her memories. But the world was hardly ever ideal, she knew, and as she'd said before: this was a bad idea.

Shivali doesn’t notice the absence at first, picking her head up and counting three pale children. Currituck isn’t among them. Again, she doesn’t consider it abnormal. Tahani spends time with her randomly so the mother doesn’t take to panic just yet. She straightens herself out and noses through the other puppies before she begins to stand and exit the den. As she stretches out her legs, she glances around. She sees Tahani but not the agouti girl. Her brows knit together and she scans over to the other wolves without seeing her in any of their company. With a new wave of anxiety, Shivali licks her lips and begins to move a little more frantically back and forth.

Her heart launches into her throat and she moves, nose to the ground, becoming absorbed in the scent the little girl left behind. Ingrained in the task, she doesn’t alert anyone else, following the trail all the way through the grove. A second smell begins to mingle and her fur bristles, surging forward to come upon a dark wolf carrying Currituck between her jaws and it takes a second to properly react. Dark eyes zero in, lips peeling back and a low grumble starts in her chest with a one and only warning.

The man as normal had been keeping watch, he found sleep never fully came and he was always on edge, this day was the same. He noticed Shivali leave the small den they had found, but thought nothing of it. Until she became frantic in her search of something. Siarut assumed that all the pups had been within the den, safely tucked against Shivali's side. Although his sisters quick departure with her nose set upon the ground gave Sia pause, and he could suddenly feel his heart in his throat. There was only one reason she would be so set on finding something or rather someone.

Leaving his post, Siarut quickly nudged Takiyok and Tomkin telling them to keep watch before he took off after Shivali. He ran quickly to try and catch up to the distraught mother when he caught the scent of Currituk mixed in with the Shivali's and ... Myrren's?

Once he came upon Shivali he could see Myrren with Curri tucked between her teeth, held firmly by the scruff. He understood Shivali's warning, he didn't let out his own as he knew this woman. But not well enough to be in such close proximity to their precious cargo. "Let her go." He spoke more common tongue than Shivali and used his words instead of his body to indicate the same thing his sister wanted. His gaze narrowed into a glare as he held himself to maximize intimidation. He wasn't as aggressive as Shivali, but he wasn't someone you wanted to mess with.

The girl squeaks when Shivali breaks into view, surprised by the sudden appearance. Her eyes widen and she wiggles a little, offering a tiny, cooing howl in response. It’s not the direction she wants to go but she can maybe eat before she tries again. Except the sounds coming from the pale mother are angry and she doesn’t look the same.

Not long after her appearance comes another wolf she’s sort of familiar with. She doesn’t have the energy in Alessia’s clutch to offer anything else except a long, wide-jawed yawn.

True to her luck, the inkstain soon found herself confronted by one of the traveling group; a pale woman of intimidating size, especially to her own petite frame. The growl was all the warning she needed. She set the pup down promptly but gently, ears flattening as Siarut arrived with sharp words in tow. For a beat she was silent, glancing between the two wolves warily.
She was wandering, She explained quietly, taking a few steps back from the pup and the pale wolves with only a brief puzzled glance between the contrast of their coats. Alone. I meant to lead her back to your group, but she would not follow. The truth was all she had to offer; she waited with bated breath to see if this would be enough, or if her intentions would be questioned.

Her breathing increases, watching the child dangle from the stranger’s jaw. It would be easy if the other woman decided against the warning, turning and running off with a child that is not her own. A child that takes what should go to her children. She doesn’t have the energy to fight or chase after her and she holds steady. It could be Sos in her jaws, though. Or Aningan or Tunerk. They’ve taken the girl into their family, haven’t they?

But Siarut comes around the corner then just as the stranger puts the child down and she doesn’t have to make the decision. Regardless of her understanding of the common tongue, she gets the gist of what’s being said. The mother takes a few steps forward but hesitates, only because Currituck backpedals away from her and beneath the dark woman’s legs.

it was a day of quiet rest and repose, nothing out of the ordinary. Tahani had been napping when Currituck took off, and when she woke, she assumed the quartet of pups were all with her sister, sleeping soundly after another hard day of traveling. but when Shivali burst from the den, and inquired as to Currituck's whereabouts, her heart pounded in fear.

wordlessly, she circled the clearing, falling behind her brother and sister as they followed the trail, hoping that the brown pup was curled up here somewhere. when she was nowhere to be found, Tahani issued a swift command to her younger siblings to watch the remaining pups, then sailed after Shiv and Sia, coming to a halt just as they'd confronted the unfamiliar girl.

a growl bubbled in her throat as she saw Currituck so close to the stranger, and she bared her teeth without thinking. "who are you?" she snarled, forgetting in her angst that she spoke in the northern tongue. she flattened herself down, eyes softening as she stared at little Tatik. "come, child," she cooed, hoping to bring the child to her side without incident. "it is all right. come to me."

Tahani was racked with guilt. how could she have let the brown babe out of her sight?

Tahani was understandably angry and Siarut made no attempt to quel the new mothers disapproval. He looked between Myreen and Tahani and Shivali, trying to smooth the situation. Tahani’s emotions clouded her to the fact that most didn’t speak their tongue. “Tahani this is Myrren. She says Currituck was wandering and just wanted to bring her back to you.” He gave the dark girl another neutral glance, “I’ve met her briefly, I believe she meant no harm.” Siarut wasn’t sure how he felt of the young child that was taking their resources. She was not related by blood, and Sia only had a limited connection to her biological mother. Although Tahani was much more connected to the child and Sia tried to respect her decision to adopt the girl.

”Myrren, these are my sisters. Shivali and Tahani, the girls mother.” There was no use mentioning the adoption as it was not her business. As he spoke their names he indicated to each woman tagging her with their respective name. “Let’s get the girl home.” He spoke to Tahani, before looking over at the yearling who was no doubt intimidated by their protective display. He seamlessly switched between languages proving his mastery of both.

Currituck doesn’t understand all the sudden commotion so when words are exchange above her head, and the angry Shivali comes near her, she can’t help but retreat back beneath the stranger. Why is the anger directed at her? Her large ears fall back against her head and she turns just as Tahani appears, feeling a little better. She offers the pale mother a glance before shuffling to the side toward Tahani. About halfway to her caretaker, she looks back to the stranger for several more encouraging yips and barks, expecting her new friend to follow along.

shitty exit post, sorry for the wait!
Whatever words she'd been about to say were interrupted by the arrival of another. She hesitated only a moment; in the next, she decided nothing was worth this risk. The yearling only dimly registered Siarut's first words, turning and bolting before she could hear the rest. She didn't stop running until she was well into the next territory, half-expecting pursuit.

Siarut tries to explain but Shivali barely listens, watching as the child lingers with the dark woman for only a moment. Tahani’s approach garners her attention and the child moves toward her, stopping and looking back, expecting the dark wolf to come along, but the next moment she is fleeing and everything is over. The mother shakes her head and smooths out her fur, scenting the air after the stranger is gone, then licks her lips and approaches her family. A curious glance at Siarut is all her older brother gets before nudging young Currituck toward her sister, and retreating back to camp.
