The days were growing longer now, but Valiant felt as if time was passing more quickly than ever. Vairë grew by the day — in size, of course, but also in beauty. There were times when he looked at her and the sun caught her just right, and all he could do was stop and stare.

Or fall down in worship, pretend-playful, as if this were just a continuation of the joke they'd shared when they first met. As cool as he tried to play it, there was a glint in his eyes that spoke of his true feelings on the matter.

Vairë was a goddess. An angel. And — Lord, I must be in heaven, he often thought to himself.

But he couldn't spend all day staring at her. She'd get tired of it, and then what would he do with himself? And he had to hunt, because what else was he going to do with all this excess energy? He might as well put it to good use. Which was what he was up to on this fine spring day: chasing rabbits through the field. He pounced just as one disappeared into its burrow.

"Shit," he grumbled, swiping dirt from his stinging nose. He began digging furiously at the entrance, his tail flagging in irritation all the while.
