The other children had been spending a lot of time together. Not with Indra though, if she could help it. She was too small to be of any interest to the others, the same with Abel; but when they left to go traipsing about the wilds, Indra noticed their absence.
For one, it was quieter around their homestead. The girl had slept in beyond the normal time and woken to the afternoon sun against her face, as well as the sticky feeling of the ground melting around her. The ground wasn't really melting — it was the ice that had crystalized during the previous night — but Indra was left feeling uncomfortable.
She got to her feet and left. She had grown somewhat taller in the last month, and while she retained the large paws and head to indicate her youth, she carried herself a little bit better. Her path did not take her too far from where Laurel slept, but far enough to be interesting, and to give Indra a new sense of wonder.
Indra'd never been this far from her mother before; the novelty of it drew a gasp from her little lungs.
