He'd hit her once- and it had sent her flying. But when he made to swipe for her again, she jerked her head back. She'd learned from her mistake, and when his claws whisked through the fur of her cheek, it was swift and clean enough to rake lines on her cheek just below her eye. The flesh reddened and swelled; above the clawmarks, a labradorite eye fixed him in her sights. Her pupils narrowed to pinpricks, exposing the sliver of green like a flash of lizard-skin.

She bared her teeth, and lunged for him again with a fury of snapping jaws as the blood began to trickle from the lowest clawmark and into the corner of her mouth, seeping into the gathering foam and colouring it red.
