Towhee, dead? On the contrary: his grandmother seemed pretty much indestructable. Sea lions were fearsome creatures. . .but a match for her? Pah! 

He thought back to the spring, to all the interactions (if sporadic) that he'd had with Towhee, wondering if he'd caught any signs of injury. Apparently, he'd totally missed each and every one of them.
