whose voice? the girl wrestled with this sudden intrusion within her mind; not her mama’s or her sister’s. 

not any voice she’d known in this lifetime. perhaps not any voice known in any lifetime; for its speaker’s inflection was distorted as if never used at all. 

her spine stiffened as the stranger recoiled, levying a question the girl had no possibility of answering. 

what was wrong with her?

was something wrong with her? her brow furrowed with confusion and ebbing worry. she could feel her muscles slipping; the ground spinning beneath her. and those eyes — back to four, and pinned upon her in whirling menace. 

she could only answer by the gradual climb of her gaze, seeking zephyra’s cold eyes with concern darkening her own.
