Unlike the unseen shadow who shared this place, Taktuq knew why she had returned. Even as she crested the uneven hills, she imagined Stone Circle rising like a vision beyond the far horizon, and with it, the faces that would meet her.
Would they be angry? Would they be glad? Or would they be unsure what to do with her entirely? Would they recognize her face? Would she recognize theirs?
They will surely be angry, her heart twisted again, and don't they have the right?
A snap broke through her wandering thoughts. Taktuq stilled and lifted her head, paw hovering in her stride. Lark song spotted the trees, but there were more here than she and them, wasn't there?
She turned a watchful gaze to the woods, dusklight catching her eyes.
