when he stirred again, it was to pull the edge of a soft caribou hide more tightly around his son. "she abandoned you, my ivory piece."
and that was all his son would know.

"she will keep them safe, my wife." he stood to his paws, pained, swaying with the effort. "they will be raised well." sun eater licked crusted red from the side of his mouth. "and then i will come for them. there is no mountain, no field, no forest, where she will keep my children. the day will arrive. and on that day, i will kill her."
c'ede. he kissed the boy's forehead clumsily, handing the bundled child to meleys.
in the snow shelter was caught strands of fur, that of those who had stood with morwenna. carefully sun eater gathered these things, ensuring that ishmira, black hawk, other shore, and his wife might find their end in one of his rare amulets. a curse, those things.
a rage followed then, and he destroyed the entrance to the half-frozen den with no thought to his own wounds, stopping only when his ribs seized and he was forced to end his barrage.
a caribou fur which had once held fa'liya lay discarded not far from their camp. sun eater found ridgeback's blood there, silently adding the once-bloodhunter to his list. he had learned through pain and theft a new lesson, and plucked several of the stained hairs from the hide, adding them among the others.
a final glance in the direction morwenna had gone before kusax̱asaa raised his head. "the sea."
but not through the taiga.
his first step was toward the mountains.
