“I talk!” the Groenendael agreed in a breathy whisper, her tail wriggling eagerly. Learning under duress was still learning. She ridded herself of Atshen’s memory with a vigorous shake and reveled instead in how kind and gallant Sunny had grown to be. She would never be entirely fluent in the common tongue — the wolves she surrounded herself with didn’t make it a necessity — but what she could say was enough to get her point across even amongst strangers, most of the time.

The sheepdog’s nerves were jumping and jangling so much that she didn’t think it was possible for her to eat and keep anything down, but the expectant expression on her young cousin’s face and the perk of his ears made it impossible to deny hm. She settled down with her portion and nibbled at it, making polite conversation with the young hunter until finally they parted ways. The liver was still warm when she withdrew it from the carcass, and in time, they went their separate ways — Sunny to store the goat meat in Morningside’s caches; and Seelie to bring her gift to Catori.
