well, that was not true. a heron or some such creature had caught itself a fish, and she had chased after it doggedly, and scared it enough to make it forget. once the fish had been held in the bird's gullet, but the wolf was tenacious: she bayed and gave chase, and eventually caught upon the stilt-legged thing with snapping teeth, and it hastened to puke up the whole catch before it took flight.

still, a win was a win. she ate the meat of the belly first, and then sank to the mud to enjoy crushing the head in her molars. the fish taste was not to her liking but the woman was not going to fuss, given how necessary a good meal had become. she, who had rounded sides and an endless hunger.

as the last of the fish vanished down her throat, she licked her lips and nose, and drew a deep breath of the lakeside air, wondering where her men had vanished to; it felt like ages since she had seen anyone, and that did not bode well for her.
