the long grass that occupied most of the plateau ebbed with the slope of the land, eventually giving way to sand and rock along the beach. he followed this progression, heading toward the sea. most of it dropped off precariously in the form of cliffs, but there was a stretch that eased more slowly, adjacent to a gentle bay he'd known before.
aditya stood just shy of the cliffs, ears pitched forward to catch the sound of the waves against the monolith. seabirds shrieked overhead, and the air was redolent of salt.
this was his place. . .his home. he never felt more at ease than he did by the ocean, and he hoped brook could find peace here, too.
and others. they would need more bodies to settle here, to claim this land. for now, he set about marking the edge of the plateau slowly, carefully, mindful of his footing. one misstep and the sandy stones could give, sending him plummeting. he had survived other such drops, but he had been younger.
now? some days, he felt as though a sturdy wind could break him to pieces.
