Backdated to the 25th

It was carnage.

Sprays of snow, disruptions to say what had occurred but not tell the whole story.

But many things were clear. The Jodai. The cougar. The blood. The Jodai’s scent crossing that of the cougar in the meadow, the fresher tracks to say she had tracked it.

The blood to say she had found it. And it had not ended well. There was blood seemingly everywhere, in the snow, on the rocks of the steps to the lake, until it congealed into a smear along a rock, a few droplets leading off, and…free fall.

There was no sign of either Jodai or cougar. No signs to say one had lived. The blood could say, but there was no telling when snow began to shift over it and cover the trails left. It would be an easy conclusion. The captain had fallen in the line of duty, securing the meadow, and had bitten off more than she could chew when the cougar had been in front of her rather than a scent she had tracked.

But, nobody had seen when a shape pulled itself to shore.

And nobody saw it leave with the imprints of wolf’s teeth in the meat of a shoulder, in the long curvature of a front leg.

She knew identities.

She also knew how to set them on fire and run.
