tamar had almost finished her task.
she must be seen with each of the mazoi. a lie must not be caught coming from her. arsenio must be protected. she would not risk the bloodshed that would surely follow his fangs, and then that of pharaoh.
when tamar thought of him, her pulse quickened. her body recalled the never-forgotten day; she allowed herself to thrill for a moment, aching for him again.
and then she pulled herself from a darkened corner of the wellspring, dried herself until damp, and slipped through the corridors.
she returned to the place where they slept, seeking @Sihaya. in her mouth the plump remains of a bird. tamar steeled herself. "mazoi," she greeted softly when she had discovered him. "the queen has sent me to serve you."

Tamar would find Sihaya in the dim light of his chambers. He sat hunched in a corner, facing a wall and muttering something unintelligible while he arranged a prized bear jaw against a cairn of rocks. Loot from the war. Still fresh from the field, debris and dirt caked his tawny pelt. A side-affect of traveling in a storm.
The Mazoi’s head turned slowly like an owl’s at the sound of her voice, pupils large against the glowing pumpkin of his iris. The wan girl stood in his doorway under the curtain of greenery, backlit from the hallway light. In her jaws was supper.
He paused for a good long while. Just staring. “Tamar,” he said eventually, “come in.” Sihaya turned to the jaw and made a small adjustment before standing back and admiring his work.
“So generous of the queen to lend me her maid,” he said with a glassy smile. “She must be pleased with my efforts in the war,” Sihaya mused. The Shabti must have appreciated the extra days spent tracking Nyra with Germanicus.

there was a dire thing against the wall.
tamar tried not to look at it, tried only to focus her ears upon what he was saying. "she is pleased, mazoi."
it was all she could think to say. the girl drew forward and lay her offering near sihaya. she settled close, and reached out to begin a tentative grooming of his nearest shoulder.
inside herself, tamar shuddered.
