Valiant was moping again. He'd spent quite a lot of time moping instead of hunting, because it was easier to feel sorry for himself than it was to move past his sorrows and make attempts to better himself. Sunspot had been giving him aple hunting lessons, as had Easy and his father in the months before that, but there'd been a lot of time in between where he'd forgotten the skills or just failed to hone them. He felt stupid stalking rabbits and only catching one a quarter of the time, and didn't know how to improve his technique enough to feel it was a useful way to spend his time.

Dawn was lucky -- sort of. He'd just turned to make his way back toward the center of the territory (with no particular destination in mind) when she began following his trail. They met not quite in the middle, and when Valiant saw her, he realized just how much he had missed her even having been far from her for most of his life. He did not quite remember meeting her for the first time; he'd been very young. But he had always felt a deep fondness for his eldest aunt, and today was no different.

"Aunt Dawn!" he called, immediately setting off at a fast jog to reach her more quickly. They hardly knew each other, but his affection was deep and solid anyway. He crashed into her without checking to see if she would be glad to receive his affection and attempted to hide himself underneath the thick fur of her chest.
