Samani could smell blood upon the snow, and she felt her heart quicken. The pace she had set increased until she found where the feathered hunter was perched, feasting on its spoils. The moon child marveled at it, padding to where she could see red splotched against white. Her nose knew the scent of blood. When she had drawn close enough, her steps became light and gentle atop the snow.

The girl’s jade gaze shifted up to the bird. A bloodied drop fell to her nose, and she licked it away quickly. Hoping that the owl would not depart, she lapped at the bloodied snow on the ground until she had melted it down several inches. When she had finished cleaning what she could find, Samani looked back up to the marvelous hunter.
