Safiya stood staring off into the pass. What had happened she could not say. But a tether had broken. She no longer missed home. Perhaps it was that home had always been quiet and unwelcome. Or perhaps she had simply gotten so good at adapting she could do nothing else. It made sense to a point.

She lifted nose to gather scents and continued her lonely midnight vigil.
