Valiant marveled at how peaceful Ajei was. He knew that her mother had died not very long ago, and with the fresh shock of their leaders' death, he'd worried often for the young couple. But somehow, he found himself bolstered by her presence rather than the other way around.

Still, he listened intently, respectfully to the lesson, and got right to work when it was done.

"You've been doin' this a long time," he thought, remembering flashes of red in the periphery of many of his memories of pack life. She'd always been quiet, in his mind, but he was realizing he'd just not paid enough attention. "I need to get better at workin' with pelts, I think."
