Valiant was tolerant of corrections, even though he was quite embarrassed to receive them. He tried ever harder to make his work above reproach, learning quickly for fear of further shame.
It was still nice, though; these were the sort of neuroses he dealt with every day. Usually he did not have such nice company.
"We do. We are," he agreed, though by his tone, it could perhaps be inferred that he was still talking himself around to the idea. He wanted to believe Ajei, but there were some days when it seemed more curse than blessing to wake up into the same cold world.
He was alone out here, tethered most strongly to the pack by ghosts. Nothing of his past — any of his pasts — remained within the borders. Or they did, he supposed. Of course they did. But they were not the key pieces. They were not the ones he'd lived for, even if they were still the ones he would bleed and die for. He didn't know how to carry on from that.
But, as always, he found that he was carrying on, anyway. The days just kept on passing, and like Ajei had said: he kept on waking up.
Valiant smiled at her. Today, he told himself, was a very nice day. Quiet and peaceful. He had a friend nearby and a task before him.
"You'll have to teach me how to make these, one of these days," he told her, sitting back to survey his work. The pelt certainly looked neater. "I suppose I'm enough of a moon wolf now that I ought to know."
Because if he wasn't a moon wolf, and if he didn't have a moon wife, what the hell was he doing here?
