A year! That was a long while to go it alone, though Valiant had roved with Dutch for quite a bit longer. Still, Beau looked well fed and healthy, and that was impressive for the amount of time he'd spent on his own.

Valiant shot him a smile, his tail whisking. "Just plain old conviviality'll do," he replied.

They carried on, Valiant stealing a few glances back at Ludo. He was half worried for, half impressed by the boy. His quietness could either mean discomfort or extreme focus. Either way, Valiant didn't think it was best to confront him about it now. They had work to do, after all — and it was finally paying off.

"Spore's fresh," he noted, pressing his nose into a hoofprint at the treeline. He kept his voice low. "Should be easy enough to spot in there — Angel said it was so white it almost glowed."
