Even if Elfie had been able to make some sounds, he would not have been able to warn the wolf, who approached him. He had not mastered the art of talking yet. However, he did try to squirm and show the least bit protest against being nosed and nudged, and - oh, please, no! - being eaten. He now recalled all the toys he had shredded to bits with a feeling of remorse. He did not want to experience their fate.

He did not. Something else happened. The curious wolf next to him froze, shrunk and moments later he was in the same inconvenient shape as Elfie was. Sucks, huh? The boy turned his head stiffly and gave as sympathy-ful look as his black button eyes were able to give. They would have lied in the sand - quiet and resigned - for a very long time, were it not for the moonlight that broke free from the thick cover of clouds and shed it's light over the two toy-wolves.

Then a miracle happened - while Elfie was still a toy, he had more freedom of movement, he could even wag his tail, though barking was still not an option. There were other means of communication at hand though. He walked toyishly over to his companion and nudged him gently to see, if he had been granted the same charm.

[The dream, however, did not proceed any further than there. Someone shifted in the sleep and managed to wake up Elfie. He blinked against the darkness of the den he shared with his little family, was relieved to find that he was still a little, lovely, cub and fell asleep again. This time - for more pleasant dreams.]
