She coughed again, the taste of dirty lakewater curdling on the back of her tongue. Sora lurched away from her parents just in time to vomit more water on the edge of the sandbar. It was whisked away by the wind.

She returned with stumping steps to Reyes and Teya. Her vision was beginning to swim with exhaustion at the edges. Sorana lifted her muzzle, blinking blearily toward the sloping mainland shore, which was closer now than their island home. The gravity of Teya's suggestion that they move elsewhere, that she was never returning to that home, had yet to hit her. Her muscles and lungs screamed for rest.

T-tired, she stammered, slumping against Teya and turning her muzzy expression toward Reyes.
