His features softened as pity overtook his expression--a clear sign to her that something was amiss, though she'd obviously picked up on that already. He definitely didn't know how to approach this subject, and in the moments before he answered her, his mind reeled with all the ways he could do this wrong and make it worse. But, he steeled himself after a few seconds as he realized that regardless of what he did or how he said it that for her, this already was the worst.
