Winter was coming, or perhaps it already had arrived. Morning greeted him with a layer of frost lining the hollow's grass, while hot breath spiraled from his maw. The woodland boy had light memories from the prior year and the difficulties that came with winter. There had been a famine that starved half his family, his mom and dad barely getting enough to eat so he could be fed. It had also been when he first took an interest in hunting so that he could feed himself and what used to be a never-ending appetite.
Supposedly, that had been an anomaly though. Winter still meant less prey, but the bison did not usually leave. Soon snow would blanket him home and the land beyond. Any doubts about staying had been swept away since his visit to Moonspear, he couldn't leave now. Not when survival would already be tough and his family needed him, and especially not as long as Polaris stayed with him. Ursus was still a threat, but Polaris had made a promise. They'd deal with them together. Despite everything though, there was still a void that grabbed hold and tugged at his chest.
Hadn't things gotten better? It had been a while since Ursus showed their ugly faces and Polaris admitted that she loves him too— but things didn't feel better. Heavy limbs carried him to the open fields where collapsed and rolled to his back. It was the same field that he had met Polaris in, where they had gazed at the sky and slept in the rays of the sun. Now it was cold and cloudy, the grey sky a void matching his own as he let out a heavy sigh.
