All Welcome
Now with the duty of protecting the inhabitants of the lake, few as they were, he kept often near where the borders were marked clear. And where they lacked, he redid them, flooding his scent to mingle with that of the lake land.

Watchful, observant; he would be able to notice any trespasser if they came.

It had been a few days since Selena was essentially claimed by the woman of the lake. A nameless maternal figure that the spirits had led her to. It wasn't long before the women had made a sort of uneasy truce, which quickly grew into something of a friendship. Or perhaps they both just had use for one another. The woman found herself a fisherman and Selena found herself a protector.

Selena paused her aimless stroll as a new scent was brought to her attention. It was fresh and smelled intimidating. Head on a swivel, the girl ceased her trot immediately to search for the newcomer but found nothing. Instead, she lowered her body to lay still under some overhanging brush next to the lake. She could be quite the convincing shadow.

He was not alone here after all.

Someone else lingered.

Cautious, downwind, he searched for this someone. And when finally spotted, he stiffled a crude laugh. They tried to hide — but they'd failed miserably.

Slowly, from behind them, he loomed. Once close enough, a growl was lured, and quick teeth snapped towards their behind with the hopes of drawing them out.

She felt their presence before they growled, but Selena had all but turned to stone. She felt a snap tease at her hindquarters, remedying her state of shock and sending her scurrying out from under her coverage.

She turned to face the large wraith, avoiding eye contact in an attempt to look as threatening as an inanimate object. The girl hummed in a questioning way to the stranger, wondering what he would have her do. Should she run? Where was her protector? Was she not instructed to stay in this area?

"I don't want trouble." She couldn't think of anything else to say, but this seemed like a good starting point. She wondered if this wolf spoke or was silent like the other.

A submissive one.

Rare, considering that most he'd encountered were other males, trying their best to be at the top... right where he wanted to be.

This woman wouldn't give trouble, as she'd so proven. Not to him, nor to Zharille. Such was pleasing, but it did not yet mean he fully trusted her.

Presumably, this one knew already knew to heed before the call of Zharille. But now she would learn to do the same to him.

Lips unfurled, teeth clenched tight in a snarl, the shadowed giant lumbered after her, circling once she'd come to a still. Unless she fought him, his movements would tighten, almost until they touched fur to fur.

The scent of Zharille was close upon her. Evidently, she was claimed to the lake. She could not leave, and Khaba would be sure to keep a close eye on this new prize.

She listened for the spirits in this moment. It was them who would protect her today, she felt it. Selena felt it in the way they tousled her dark fur, soothing her and letting her know all of this was okay. It was to be expected, coming into a new land.

If the man wanted her dead, she would already be dead. Slowly, the subordinate was understanding the way of living with these wolves. Much more was said with movement and gestures rather than with words.

This man, just like the large woman, said nothing. As he circled her, she felt as small as a field mouse. Squeezing her eyes shut, the young woman felt the heat and musk from the giant fall dominantly over her. With little distance between them, the scent of the large woman was more apparent on him as well. This set Selena at ease. Okay, so they know each other.

"Nice to meet you?" The talking was more for her nerves at this point.

They spoke once, and then again. He did not enjoy hearing these words, for there was only one other in this place that he conversed with verbally. This would not change.

As words fell their lips, a huge muzzle lunged, teeth snapping near that of this woman's. Whether they snagged or missed was up to fate, for he had not purposely aimed.

Stop with your words! — this action told. Zharille did not like them, nor understand them. It was better for this one to learn that now, rather than later.

She recoiled but was just met with more wraith as it seemed she was surrounded by his darkness. She felt teeth run along her already scraped nose and as much as Selena wanted to exclaim, she stayed quiet and dare not speak again.

At least, that was what she assumed he wanted. It was the last thing she did before he lunged. An uneasiness fell over the two as Selena held her belly to the floor, eyes fixed on the man's paws.

She wouldn't speak around him again.

She did not speak again, nor make a sound of rebuttal.

Good, he voiced with a snort.

Then, releasing her from his trap, Khaba pulled away. He took slow steps in another direction, presumably leaving her. For now, anyway.

So that is what he wanted. For her to shut up. The entire interaction didn't sit right with her, but it didn't matter. The brute could snap her neck in an instant and Selena was sure it was not her time to join the pack of the dead.

As the wraith made his exit, she did not move from where she lay. She did not so much as stir until he vanished from view. I don't want to move wrong, too. The girl felt an unfamiliar voice hiss in the back of her mind, but quickly disregarded it and went about her day.
