he had chosen the swimming after all.
to and fro, to and fro.
black hawk he was able to dismiss. she had not been raised properly and thus had no pride nor ability to stand against morwenna's whispering.
ridgeback, a man whose wife had left his weakness and who surely fawned over those beautiful. men were easy creatures. had not the chieftain learned this of himself?
ishmira. she had been too closely bonded to blackfell. he should have seen it, but in his pride he had not.
other shore was the only to annoy him at all. but then again, young and foolish girls saw themselves noble.
he turned in the stream, gritting his teeth as its rough current slammed against his shoulder; bracing; bracing, stretching his arm and paw slowly in the deluge as he considered his own future.
he was not ready to think of wives. perhaps not ever again. but to ensure at least two were filled with lanzadoii power in spring, before spring; it was a cold musing not without its own dire hurtful pleasantry.

— daa’ka watches from the bank.
red-rimmed, face still painted with the dried blood of prayer.
he sees penance.
he steps closer, paws dragging mud. a red feather tied crude into the fur of his shoulder, slick with wet. and shoulders wearing the caribou hide gifted by the pretty @Talvani.
he sits and waits for brother to join him upon the sands.

morwenna.
she was the final. the remembrance of her face sent a pointed entanglement of things through kusax̱asaa; a fierce desire, a simmering hatred, a shocked anguish.
when he looked up, daa'ka sat upon the shoreside. chieftain hauled himself bodily from the water, streaming; he moved haltingly to his brother.
he would think on her another time.
where he might have teased with a spray of water, kusax̱asaa saw that his sibling was — caught, caught in the verve which he had always wanted for river walker.
talvani's scent softly touched the air. he waited, sitting close.

— daa'ka knows the rhythm of his brother’s body as surely as he knows the beat of his own heart. he watches with crimson glinting eyes, one sclera blood red from trauma to his face long ago.
eyes that narrow with suspicion on black-furred brother.
the sun clan would be replenished. with those of their blood, not outsiders as it had been. that was no fault of his brother. trust was blind to be placed in strangers, faith. but ice raven willed it would not be again. daa'ka listened, daa'ka heard.
he flicks eyes to kusax̱asaa with a rare steadiness—clear of the month's earlier wrath, filled with something else.
inhaling stiffly. looking to the sea. the currents that slosh loudly.

you want me wed so soon.he tells to him, though it had been daa'ka himself who vowed to take a wife. who vowed to have children soon.

she agrees. talvani. she say yes. we go soon. but i speak to you first.
inhaling stiffly. looking to the sea. the currents that slosh loudly.
ice raven sees. he lays the feather. not by chance. not by trick. but by will.he places one paw to his chest. then, teeth plucking the red feather from his fur it was tangled in, and moves to thread it there upon his brother's.
a sign, brother. for us. for the line. for c’ede’. for the pups that will come. he sees us still—he chooses us still.

a red feather.
kusax̱asaa only stared, stared at its fluttering crimson as daa'ka fixed it close.
he was aware of a sting to his eyes, a slow creeping at first; he reached a paw to touch this emblem of ice raven's continued power and let out a breath, shuddering.
"a sign."
his chin trembled. determination shone.
"yes. he is with us, daa'ka."
a breath. "you will be ghost talker to the saatsine. we need you. you are bloodhunter and speaker both now, brother."
and then he laughed — "yes. i want you wed soon. and you want to be wed soon, hm?" he teased, tapping the hide-covered shoulder of his sibling.

— daa’ka’s smirk is faint, but it shows—half-torn at one corner by scar, the other crooked like a wolf remembering how to smile.
i bleed for ice raven,he mutters. he looks now to the red feather now resting against his brother’s chest.
i speak not just what i see. i speak what comes.
no more wives of mountain strangers. no more with no caribou hunter blood. no more pups raised by women who do not bleed lanzadoii. the line will be clean. strong. ice raven’s will. our hands.
the throes of religion creep through him. this is not his mind that speaks. he believes it to be ice raven's will. this is what must be. it is how they must live.
wed soon. all. ice raven watches. he will bless.
it was most imperative now, above all, to rebuild the sun clan. the children must be taught. the women must be mothers. the men must be husbands.
meleys,he mutters of their sister, almost to himself first. then, louder, for kusax̱asaa.
will she take lanzadoii man?
first is the matter of finding one.
