Redshank was an angry boy, but to both himself and to Screech, it was justifiable. Screech couldn't voice his support of his friend right now but he had known of his sentiments prior to this event, and found that the more Rannoch spoke the more connected he felt with the boy of his age. But he was sympathetic to Rannoch too - Screech knew what it was like to be injured and living somewhere far from home, he even knew what it felt like to be stuck with enemies all around, such as Blackfeather Woods.

This hadn't been the smart move by Redshank, but it was happening and there was no reversing it. Screech watched everyone struggle to remain somewhat calm and he saw Redshank struggling against the force that Rannoch had built here; then he was staring pointedly at Rannoch, studying him and casting the chaos in to darkness simultaneously. But you did, Screech said, finally making his voice work.

He was looking for you for months. Look at him - he's practically starving to death, and that wouldn't have happened if you had stayed in the Vale. Oddly, Screech's voice was level and almost factual in its manner, rather than the usual shout or belligerence. He couldn't help but feel like Redshank's issues were Rannoch's fault to some degree and that, deep down, hurt him too.

Are they more worthy family than Redshank? And me? The boy's ears pulled backwards upon his head and he frowned, his head turned so that he could only see Redshank and the wolves holding him.
