augur was very large; therefore being tossed into a pile of himself was daunting for his great body. 

he heard buffalo hunter's barking. the bison, maddened with pain, slammed its head into the ground seconds after he rolled away. it continued to do this, snorting and blustering as its wounds continued to bleed leakily into the short grass and dusty earth.

augur forced himself upright. both he and she were limping now. but the fragrance of blood in the air kept him sharklike and the presence of buffalo hunter kept him protective. he bellowed a defiant call of his own as the lead bison turned on the dog.

augur bit at the thick fat and hair one one side of its throat.
