There was one thing about blood. It was an easy scent to follow. It was even easier when there was a trail, in the shape of footprints much smaller than Zaahira's own.
She'd left the skirmish with her own set of wounds, a searing, throbbing pain that tried to tell her to stand still, even if just for a moment. But she'd refused. She was powerful. She was fire. Khaba had selected her for a reason.
She would be collected, for a while; silent unless spoken to, shake her head 'no' when dinner had been served. But once the sun had set upon the Lake, she'd slither out from beneath her Alpha's steely embrace and set off to the last place she'd seen her maiden.
No avail.
But what there was, amidst the deep crimson and fragments of ebony that were scattered amongst the grass, was a trail. All painted red.
Zaahira had not been hopeful, yet somewhere, in some part of her, there was a tiny beam of yellow light. Soft and faded as if it were coming from far away; a crack in a doorframe. And she followed it. Lord, did she chase it, even as her heart began to tremor within her chest and her tongue slipped out from her lips.
And yet, for as much as she wished they would be, the heavens were not on her side that day.
What she saw was somehow infinitely worse than anything her mind could conjure. But even still, the gentle violet of moon still looked pretty on her.
She is quiet as she lays beside her lover. Her nose presses into the scruff of her neck. She is cold, and the scent of her was no longer there. This bundle of meat, fur and bones was not Selena anymore. But at some point, it had been.
Though their tryst had been all too brief, if no one else would respect Selena, Zaahira would.
She shuffles and departs from her momentarily. When she returns, within Zaahira's jaws is one small, ivory flower, pristinely picked with the stem still attached. She places it against Selena's shoulder.
Zaahira would remain at her side until the sun showed itself again. Nothing was said; she could not hear her anymore.
Before she leaves, she nudges her eyes closed, and presses one final kiss to her temple.
