backdated to june 19th following the end of the war with greatwater lake!
The end of the war was swift.
There was no bloodshed, and she had put up no argument about taking Khaba as prisoner. She was with the other Mazoi as they dragged him away, ceded the land to Zharille and whatever she wished to do with it. Zaahira would not go with her. Frankly, she could set the lake aflame and the aspwoman would not bat an eye.
His living quarters were now the catacombs deep within Akashingo's underground. She was there when he was imprisoned, there to hear Senmut's sentencing, there to see the green-eyed look that was cast over his shoulder in her direction.
And when the crowd departed and positions of guardianship were set, Zaahira lingered in Khaba's chamber for only a minute longer than was necessary. She stood stall, unmoving, an ungodly force, and she said nothing. He knew very well how she felt about him, now, if it had not been obvious before.
Traitorous was she, but not before he had done the same to her.
She was not the first on shift, and so she had gone on her path to the wellspring. Alone, she would bathe. Alone, she would return to her barrack, take only pickings from dinner when the fellahin offer it to her. Alone, she would knock back fermented berries and let the burn consume her chest, let the fuzziness of her mind and the heaviness of her feet hold her down.
And alone, late that eve; she would stumble out to the steppes, nestle in the sagebrush, and cry beneath the moonlight. Cry for the Lake she had loved so dearly that crumbled beneath her feet. The woman she had begun to open her heart to, only for her to be stolen from her with the softest squeeze; the woman who she touched beneath these very stars. The Alpha who she had once hailed with near religious regard who was now held in her new home with his paws tied.
And when she blinks away the glass, she wonders; had she known what would happen, would she ever have taken the offer of residency within the Lake?
And that, she doesn't know.
